Date published: 22/02/2010

A man is in hospital after a fail-to-stop collision in Woodhouse Park. It is believed the car involved was stolen minutes earlier from a house in Heald Green, Stockport.

Just before 11.55pm on Saturday 10 February 2010, patrolling officers witnessed a collision involving two cars, one of which collided with a pedestrian, a 46-year-old man, at the junction with Simonsway and Ruddpark Road.

A black Vauxhall Astra, driving along Simonsway at speed with a silver Ford Mondeo, was seen to mount the pavement before the collision.

The injured man was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital. He suffered a broken leg, but is not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

Both cars were abandoned at the scene and are being forensically examined by police.

It is believed the Astra was stolen just minutes before the collision from a house on St Austell Drive in Heald Green, Stockport.

At about 11.45pm, the 59-year-old man inside went to check on a noise coming from downstairs.

He saw a man with a knife at the bottom of the stairs, who asked him where the car keys were.

The offender took the keys to a black Vauxhall Astra and a Ford Focus, as well as a plasma TV screen. Both cars were driven away.

The offender is described as being white, about 6ft tall of stocky build and 30-years-old. He was wearing dark clothing.

Detective Constable Tim Flint said: "We are investigating these two incidents, while working closely with our colleagues in the Road Policing Unit.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have information about either incident to please call us. The man in hospital could have suffered life-threatening injuries and we need to speak to those responsible for causing them.

"We can reassure the communities of Heald Green and Woodhouse Park that over the coming days we will carry out detailed inquiries on the cars and with people in the local area."
