The winners of a competition to find Stockport Market Mums of the year were crowned at a special ceremony in the bustling market place last weekend.
In this year’s competition there were two age categories - Mums under 40 years and Mums over 40 years.
The winner of under 40 category was Elizabeth Barratt from Offerton and the winner of the over 40 category was Margaret Thurston from High Lane.
Elizabeth Barratt was nominated by her daughter Sophie-Lea who gave the following reason for nominating her mum: “I love her as she cares for me. I think this would be a good opportunity for her as many things have happened in the past. I think winning would make her the proudest mum ever.”
Margaret Thurston was nominated by her daughter Sue who, said: “I am a forty year old with mild learning disabilities. My mum runs me around to many places as I can not drive. I never show her how much I love her – this would be a good opportunity to do so.”
On Saturday 13th March, the day before Mothering Sunday, the winning mums where collected from their homes by a stretched limousine and brought to Stockport Market.
When they arrived at the market they were presented with a fabulous prize package of treats courtesy of Stockport Market Traders and Town Centre Businesses. This included a hair cut and blow dry, a manicure, a meal for two, gift voucher for the market and photography session.
Both winning mums were overwhelmed with the amazing prizes. When Elizabeth Barratt was informed that she had won she initially thought that she was being subjected to a prank phone call and could not quite believe that it was true.
