Whiteout in the Stockport Sunday League
Date published: 23/02/2010
The saying, 'there's nowt so funny as folk', could be slightly altered to ' there's nowt so funny as the weather ' after the latest wipe out, or should that read ' white out ' of all Sunday's scheduled fixtures in the Stockport & District Sunday Football League. The two inch blanket of snow that covered every pitch in the area looked lovely, but has given fixture officer Kraig Brocklehurst more problems, adding to his already long list of rescheduled games.
What will cause him, and the league, the biggest headache is the postponements of the cup games. The final six of the H. English Memorial Trophy round 3 should have taken place, plus two of the P.Bailey/G.Wright Memorial Trophy outstanding round 2 games. Hopefully, these can be played early in March.
Taking a look at this Sunday's fixtures ( without looking at the long range weather forecast), fingers crossed it will be kind. The big game of the day is up at Woodley Sports, where Queens, Bredbury will play Poulton Royal, the Wallasey SL side, in the Quarter final of the Cheshire FA SundayCup. Poulton, are third in their Premier Division and unbeaten, winning four and drawing the other three in their seven games so far. A good game is in prospect, and one I feel the Queens can win. Good luck to them.
It's also an important day for seven of our lower division sides playing to get into the semi finals of the Stockport & District FA Sunday Trophy. The other team making up the eight quarter finalists is High Lane, from the East Cheshire SL, currently lying third in their Division One. Winning five of their eight league games and losing the other three, they are seven points behind the leaders, High Lane WMC, with two games in hand. They have a home tie against Yew Tree from Division one. SGC, 4th in Division four,, have home advantage against AFC Stockport, leaders of Division three. In the all-Marple affair, Roaring Winds, 8th in Division two, will play Marple FC, joint leaders of the fourth. Great Moor Travellers, top of Division two, are at home to Adswood United reserves, 6th in Division three. My four for the semis are High Lane, AFC Stockport, Marple FC and Great Moor Travellers. Good luck to all the teams.
There are a number of changes for this week’s programme. Along with the above, here are the other changes concerning the league games:
Champions Cale Green, who have some catching up to do, will be at home to FC Kenilworth. Bredbury FC's game with Real Reform will have a change of venue due to Queens’ cup match. Cheadle FC meet Offerton Green, who if they win go top of the division. Bottom club Stockport Dynamoes play Barlow.
There are some interesting games in Division One. Leaders Heaton Plough, who have tasted defeats in their last two games, one league and one cup, should get back on winning ways and stay top. They are away to Harvester, who beat Offerton Nomads in the District FA Cup last Sunday, but have not managed a win in the league. Millbrow are at home to Stockport Norris. So are Higher.Poynton, who have a tough game against Hillgate Spartans. They are 4th and 6th respectively, so it’s a game neither side can afford to lose. Straw look on course to carry on their surge up the divison. They play tenth in the table Offerton Nomads.
In Division Two the game of the day is on St. Thomas's rec., Second placed Offerton Green reserves against fourth placed South Park United. With the leaders, Great Moor Travellers, on cup duty, the Green, if they win, will go top on goal difference. Atlas are at home to bottom club Dilke Celtic. Neither Hindley Street or Field Mount have been involved in a drawn game so far this season. Could their meeting, provide the first for both clubs? Great Moor, who are not having the best of months, will be looking to get back on the winning trail away at Werneth.
Whatever happens in the Division Three games, there will be no change of leadership. Leaders AFC.Stockport are involved in the Stockport FA Trophy quarter finals. Hinds Head can get within a point of them if they win at home against Stockport Dynamoes reserves. FC.Wrights, who have slipped down to third, need to win to keep their title hopes alive. They play, the ‘we either win, or lose’ AFC Cheadle, who have six wins and six defeats so far in their twelve league games. Higher.Poynton reserves should keep their winning streak going, They are at home against the struggling Offerton Park Social Club. Horse & Jockey are still among the front runners but will not have it easy against Mount Villa, who are hitting a bit of form. Romiley Sports, on the crest of a slump, face Edgeley Villa, another team who need a win to give them some confidence.
Joint leaders of the Division Four, Cheadle Hulme Athletic, could put a bit of daylight between them and Marple FC, who are playing in the FA Trophy, if they win their away game against Brinnington Ward Labour Club. The Ash, who broke their duck the other Sunday, will be looking to make it two in succession by beating Millbrow reserves. Offerton Green ‘B', sliding down the table, have a tough home game. Their opponents, Stockport Athletic, would go second if they win. Finger Post Flyers desperately need a win, to stay in contention. They are at home to Adswood United 'B'. Bredbury Travellers are at home to Spurley Hey and would go above their opponents if they manage to win.
